Music genre and youth identity
Published by Rolling Stones and Metal Hammer, left to right
The Rock music genre has constructed the youth identity by displaying young
rock musicians. The texts also show us the rebellious nature of rock music
which fits the youth who are always rebelling against the status quo. We can
tell from the magazine because they are displayed rocking long hair, young
musicians, and very vulgar language.
The preferred readings would be the audience finding long hair, being
rebellious and rock music as something very cool. Some might find some
aspects of the representation cool and others not, such as finding rock music
fun but not necessarily interested in being rebellious. However, there are
also people who feel repulsed by the magazine’s identity and reject everything
the magazine shows, for example, men’s hair should not be long, or rock music
is satanic.
These representations may affect the audience in different ways. People who
feel attracted to them may want to look like them, listen to rock music, adopt
rebellious attitudes, etc. People who feel disgusted by it may petition for the
termination of these representations and identities that they feel have a
negative impact for the public.
